Retaining Walls

Segmental block, natural stone, and engineered retaining walls with drainage and reinforcement.

A retaining wall is an engineered structure, not decorative masonry. NextGen HIG builds segmental block, natural stone, boulder, and engineered retaining walls across NJ, PA, and CT — with the drainage, compacted backfill, and geogrid reinforcement that keeps a wall holding grade for decades instead of leaning or toppling after the first wet spring.

Most failed retaining walls we tear out and rebuild weren't hit by a car — they were built without drainage. Water accumulates behind the wall, hydrostatic pressure builds, and eventually the wall gives. We install perforated drainage tile behind every wall we build, with clean backfill and geogrid reinforcement where real load requires it.

Walls over 4 feet tall typically require engineering and municipal permits, which we handle end-to-end. For taller or more complex installations, we coordinate with structural engineers and municipal inspectors so the wall is code-compliant and documented for resale. Under-4 residential garden walls are simpler but still require proper drainage to last.

What's included

Every retaining walls project includes

  • Site Survey & Engineering

Grade survey, load assessment, and structural engineering drawings for walls over 4 feet or with surcharge loads.

  • Permitting

Municipal permits pulled and inspections coordinated where required. We handle submissions and approvals end-to-end.

  • Excavation & Footing Prep

Excavation to stable subgrade, footing base compacted and leveled — the wall is only as strong as what it sits on.

  • Perforated Drainage System

4-inch perforated pipe at the base of the wall, wrapped in drainage fabric, run to daylight or an approved outlet — the single most important invisible detail.

  • Block, Stone, or Boulder Installation

Wall built per spec — segmental block systems, stacked natural stone, or large-format boulders depending on design.

  • Geogrid Reinforcement

Woven geogrid layers tied into the wall and extended into compacted backfill — gives the wall structural capacity to resist soil load.

  • Clean Backfill & Cap

Washed stone backfill, compacted lifts, and capstone or finish course — all sized to the wall system.

When to call us

Signs you need retaining walls

Catch these early and retaining walls repairs stay simple — ignore them and you're paying for interior damage on top of the exterior fix.

  • Wall leaning, bulging, or tilting

Any visible deformation is a structural warning. Leaning walls are often months, not years, from failure — get them inspected before they come down during a storm.

  • Cracks or displacement in block or stone

Horizontal cracks across the wall face, vertical cracks at joints, or blocks rotating out of plane indicate structural distress. Rebuild is usually the durable fix.

  • Soil washing out from behind the wall

Soil visible on the downhill side, or sinkholes forming behind the wall, mean backfill is migrating through drainage pipe or over the top — drainage or reinforcement failure.

  • Drainage problems or water saturation

Wet or muddy conditions at the base of the wall, or standing water against the wall face, indicate drainage isn't working. Uncorrected, this leads to wall failure within a few winters.

  • Grade change making property unusable

Sloping lots that can't be used for a patio, garden, or driveway often benefit from terracing with retaining walls — converting unusable slopes into level usable space.

Materials & options

Systems we install for retaining walls

We don't push a preferred brand — we spec the system that fits your building, climate, and ownership horizon. Here's what we install and when each makes sense.

  • Segmental concrete block (Versa-Lok, Allan Block, Keystone)

Engineered interlocking block systems with integral setback, batter, and geogrid connection. Lifetime structural warranties and predictable performance. Our default for most functional walls.

  • Natural stone walls

Stacked fieldstone, quarry-cut blocks, or dimensional stone. Best-in-class appearance and longevity; highest cost and most skill-intensive. The right choice for high-visibility applications and historic properties.

  • Large-format boulder walls

Machine-set boulders for naturalistic walls on larger properties. Less formal than block, more organic than cut stone. Works well on wooded and rural properties.

  • Poured concrete with stone or brick veneer

For tall walls with heavy surcharge, cast-in-place reinforced concrete is sometimes required. Veneered with brick or stone for appearance. Typically needs structural engineering.

  • Perforated drainage tile and clean backfill

4-inch perforated pipe wrapped in drainage fabric, installed at the base of every wall and run to daylight. Clean washed stone backfill behind the wall, compacted in lifts. These invisible details are what makes a wall last.

  • Geogrid reinforcement

Woven geogrid layers tied into the wall face and extended into compacted backfill. Required on walls over 4 feet and any wall with load above. Turns a gravity wall into a reinforced structure.

Our process

How it works

  1. 1

    Assessment & Design

On-site survey, grade measurement, and discussion of material and style options. Photo documentation of existing conditions.

  2. 2

    Engineering & Permits

For walls over 4 feet or with load above, structural engineering drawings and municipal permit applications.

  3. 3

    Excavation & Base

Footing excavation to stable subgrade, base preparation, and drainage pipe rough-in.

  4. 4

    Wall Construction

Block, stone, or boulder installation with geogrid reinforcement layers placed at specified courses.

  5. 5

    Drainage & Backfill

Drainage stone and clean backfill placed in compacted lifts, geotextile fabric installed, and cap course set.

Questions

Frequently asked

  • In most NJ, PA, and CT municipalities, any wall over 4 feet (measured from footing to top) requires a permit and engineered drawings. Walls with a surcharge load (driveway, slope, pool deck above) often require permits at lower heights. We confirm requirements with your municipality before quoting.
